New perspectives through international volunteering

As part of the three-year European Solidarity Corps project supported by the European Union, Philanthropy continues to welcome international volunteers who contribute their knowledge, skills, and perspectives while gaining valuable experience through humanitarian and community-based activities.

One of these volunteers is Sina Salim from Turkey, who joined Philanthropy as a Project Assistant through the European Solidarity Corps programme. Since arriving in Serbia, Sina has become actively involved in the organization's work, supporting project implementation, participating in field activities, and engaging with local communities. His volunteer experience reflects the project's broader mission of promoting solidarity, intercultural learning, and meaningful social engagement.

After spending time in Serbia, Sina reflects on his journey and the experiences that have shaped his stay so far. "I have completed three months with Philanthropy. This is not only the longest time I have lived abroad, but it is also my first time working within a foreign local NGO. It has been a wonderful opportunity to learn about the organization's projects and to observe field activities in Ruma and Kraljevo."

During his stay, Sina has had the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of humanitarian work in Serbia while developing both professional and personal skills. Through direct involvement in project activities and visits to local communities, he has witnessed the impact that solidarity and community engagement can have on people's lives.  Among the many experiences he has had, one event for him was particularly meaningful.

"The most profound experience for me so far was attending the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial in Belgrade. In my opinion, remembrance and confrontation are incredibly important. It was a moving public event, and I felt that everyone present genuinely confronted and accepted their responsibility regarding the hardships those individuals were forced to endure."

Sina also participated in the preparation of humanitarian aid packages for distribution to beneficiaries, supporting the organization’s efforts to assist local communities.

Beyond his professional engagement, Sina has also experienced challenges and advantages that come with living in a new country and adapting to a different cultural environment.

"Navigating life in a foreign country can be difficult, and the feeling of alienation is a personal challenge. Yet, the possibility of being a part of something good gives me the resilience to keep going."

As he continues his journey with Philanthropy, Sina remains committed to supporting humanitarian initiatives and strengthening connections between people from diverse backgrounds. His story demonstrates how volunteering can create meaningful experiences that benefit both volunteers and the communities they serve.

"Thank you to Philanthropy and ADRA for making this journey possible."

His experience highlights one of the key values of the European Solidarity Corps programme: creating opportunities for young people to contribute to positive social change while learning from different cultures and communities. Through volunteering, participants not only support local initiatives but also develop greater empathy, resilience, and intercultural understanding.
